Mixing & mastering & editing, oh my!

Today we spent six solid hours in the studio with Mike and Christian, mixing and mastering and editing (oh my, indeed!).

My brain is completely exhausted but twelve of the fourteen tracks for our upcoming Christmas album are now done.

This sometimes seems like a never-ending project, but we’re so close at this point that I can practically taste it.

Another day in the studio

We had hoped to finish up the Christmas album today, but — as is often the case when recording — it all took longer than anticipated.

So, we’ve got one more session scheduled for later this week, and that really should do it.

Of course, we always manage to have quite a bit of fun in the process. Prashad might look innocent, but he’s the one who had everyone cracking up!

Where it’s happening

This is the studio where we’ve been spending many (many!) hours over the past few weeks with Mike Georgia, our recording engineer.

The project? Putting the finishing touches on our Oratorio performance from last April.

We’re excited to be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel!

Recording day 6 of 6: it’s a wrap!

Whoohoo — they did it!

Ramesha and Christian were in the studio every day from last Friday to today (Wednesday). They couldn’t record Saturday or Sunday morning, due to the Sevaka retreat and Sunday service, but they still ended up with five entire days worth of recording time.

Others joined them at various times to record tablas (Lewis), keyboard and harp (Prashad); and background vocals (Satyana, Prashad, and yours truly).

And today I dug deep in order to do the one intro Ramesha requested on flute. I wouldn’t let him take a video of me playing because I was using such a compromised position in order not to engage my wonky shoulder! And I’m soooo out of shape it was downright embarrassing. But I somehow managed to get it done.

Ramesha poured a ton of energy into this — working out a detailed schedule; planning arrangements; coordinating times; doing his own musical “due diligence” (of course). And it shows in the end result.

It’s going to be a wonderful album.
