Coping with the unexpected

Today I had a noon time medical appointment in Grass Valley, followed by a mid-afternoon appointment in Auburn. This was perfect, as it allowed me to set up a lunch date with my Dad and two of my siblings.

Unfortunately, my body took exception to something I ate yesterday, throwing my system off and making last night and this morning more than a little uncomfortable.

My energy was pretty zapped but I still got it together to drive to my appointments. So far, so good…except that it decided to rain and then snow throughout the whole drive. Thank goodness it didn’t accumulate much, so the roads remained clear!

Needless to say, I was pretty much wiped out by the time I got home.

What a difference a week makes

Last Sunday I was on Day 6 of my weeklong retreat at Blue Sage Sanctuary, and Ramesha was sending me photos of our slightly snowbound apartment (the above photo was taken from our kitchen window).

Today everywhere we look is green and brown again, thanks to the rain which has been coming down steadily for days now. And I felt very blessed to be back in the Temple of Light for Sunday service, after missing last week.

But the thoughts, insights, and lessons of the retreat are very much with me still.

Meanwhile at Ananda Village…

I know there are parts of California with way more snow than this; nevertheless, it’s a ton of snow for Ananda Village. I’m finding it somewhat disorienting to be away from home during such a major weather event.

With still more snow in the forecast, it’s also a bit of a challenge to stay focused in the present and enjoy my retreat without worrying about whether I’ll be able to get home when the time comes.

Snow, snow…and more snow

The storm that we waited (and waited!) for all of yesterday finally arrived overnight. And now that it’s here, it doesn’t want to stop.

It’s been snowing steadily throughout the day and is predicted to continue until morning. Earlier I had to reschedule a couple of medical appointments, but fortunately we don’t have anywhere we have to be tomorrow. As for Sunday, who knows?!?

For us it’s mostly just a matter of inconvenience, although I do get a little nervous when it goes and goes and goes without stopping.

I’m pretty sure that’s due to a dream I had when I was nine years old and got to experience snow for the first time.

My best friend’s family traveled to Tahoe to ski and the two daughters each got to invite a friend to go along. It started snowing while we were there. Not hard, I don’t think, but enough to make an impression on a little girl from the San Francisco Bay Area.

I also wonder if it perhaps triggered a past life memory, because I dreamt of waking up and opening a front door that was completely blocked by snow. I can still recall being freaked out by the idea of being trapped inside a snowbound cabin, even though that was more than half a century ago.

Of course, a quick Google search showed me that it’s not all that uncommon. But geez, talk about claustrophobia! 🥶

Wintry scenes

Deer and trees in a sprinkling of snow

Winter is evidently not done with us yet — which is good news for drought-stricken California!

The expected big winter storm is just settling in, but boy oh boy is it cold already. Lots of snow is on the way.

A snowy Sunday

This was the perfect snowy Sunday…

It was barely raining when we left early in the morning to rehearse before service, but the predicted snow did arrive midway through the morning.

By the time service was actually underway, sitting in the Temple of Light felt a little like being in the middle of a snow globe!

But the snow had completely stopped by the time service ended and we were ready to drive home to a winter wonderland.

Then the weather had cleared up as the day ended, resulting in a beautiful cloudy sunset.

Altogether perfect.

Weather from dawn to dusk

It was a beautiful sunrise this morning (the photo really doesn’t do justice to the colors of the sky).

We ran errands in town in the afternoon, driving back in the rain and reaching home just as it transitioned into snow.

Dusk came early, with the snow sticking pretty good after only about thirty minutes.

It’s beautiful weather, really.

Snowy seclusion

On the way out for my snowy walk.

I’m very much enjoying our post-Christmas seclusion time.

All this snow makes it even more special; providing extra motivation to stay warm and cozy at home.

Except that the build up to Christmas severely disrupted my walking routine and I’m feeling the need to get back to it.

So, I bundled up and took a (careful!) walk in some rather deep snow.

Returning from my snowy walk.

Winter’s return

Well, I think someone up there is having fun with me! Yesterday I wrote about the coming of spring, so this is what we woke up to this morning! It’s not likely to stick for long, but still…😂
