More autumnal beauty

Cicely Mary Barker

This beautiful illustration and poem are from the book The Fairies of The Autumn by Cicely Mary Barker (1895-1973).

I was already in college when I discovered her work, but that didn’t stop me from absolutely loving it — for its delicate beauty but also for the way it brought fairies to life for me.

We currently live surrounded by oak trees — and in a banner year for acorns! — so I completely resonate with…

The Acorn Fairy
To English folk the mighty oak
Is England’s noblest tree;
Its hard-grained wood is strong and good
As English hearts can be.
And would you know how oak-trees grow,
The secret may be told:
You do but need to plant for seed
One acorn in the mould;
For even so, long years ago,
Were born the oaks of old

Living in a golden aura

Golden oaks from Sunset Ridge

I keep attempting to capture in a photograph how it feels to live in the midst of a forest of oak trees in the late fall.

The California oaks seem to be on a slightly slower rhythm than most of the other deciduous trees. Most of the dramatic red and orange foliage finished a while ago, but the golden oak foliage seems to go on and on and on.

We see oak trees from every window in our house and I marvel at their beauty each passing day — especially when the sky provides a brilliant blue background.

It’s also cool to look across at the surrounding hills and see big patches of gold, and to realize that that’s how our neighborhood looks from the other side.

But best of all is living in this beautiful golden glow. It feels almost astral. (Maybe it is!)

Subtle but magical

I absolutely love living in the midst of a forest of magical, golden oak trees at this magical, golden time of year.

Of course, I’ve been admiring dramatic red, orange, and yellow foliage for weeks. But there’s something about the more subtle, muted gold of the oak trees that really does it for me.

Especially since there are so many of them here, so I end up feeling surrounded by golden magic.

At any rate, this was my view as I went to get into my car shortly before sunset this evening.

Glorious.

Autumn’s golden glory

I appreciate autumn leaves of all types and colors, but I do believe what I love the most is when the oak leaves turn golden.

Because oak trees predominate in the area where we live, I start to feel like I’m living in a beautiful golden dream.

These photographs are taken from the parking area of our home. I just had to try and capture the beauty before I headed out to run errands.
