Our European foodie checklist

Having waited so long since our last trip to Europe, we had a long list of foods that we were eager to taste once again. And I’m happy to report that we’ve eaten pretty much everything on our list:

Cappuccino (lots and lots of cappuccinos!) = ✅
Pizza (quite a bit of pizza) = ✅
Swiss cheese* = ✅
Gelato = ✅
Pizzoccheri = ✅
Tiramisu = ✅
Gnocchi di zucca = ✅
Pasta con pesto = ✅
Risotto = ✅
Torta di mele (apple); also cioccolato (chocolate), nocci (nuts), della nonna (Grandmother), etc) = ✅

It almost looked like we weren’t going to fit in fondue or raclette, but tonight we had a family dinner featuring both, so… = ✅

I do believe that the only local treat that we haven’t yet had is polenta. Oh well, I think we’ll survive.

* Meaning about fifteen different types of cheese produced in Switzerland, but NOT Emmenthaler (the one with holes), which most of Swiss folks I know don’t even like!

The perfect gelato

It seems the spotty internet at our Airbnb is why I can’t easily upload photos and videos, so the full story of where we are and what we’re doing will wait until we get back to strong wi-fi land.

Meanwhile, my goal will be to share just one photo a day.

So, today we took the train to Vernazza — another one of the Cinque Terre. After visiting a beautiful 14th century church and walking around the harbor, we were finally ready to have our first Cinque Terre gelato.

Imagine our delight when we realized that we were standing directly in front of Amore Mio Gelato. Too perfect!

A walk by the lake

Manu and Ramesha

Today felt like our first real visit to Lugano itself.

We parked at our usual autosilo (parking garage); made a stop at the bank; and walked to a pizzeria near the lake. There we had our first real pizzas (le prime pizze!) of this trip and they were delicious.

Le prime pizze

Then we walked down Via Nassa and along the lake to Parco Ciani, where we met up with Ramesha’s sister, Manu. We got gelato, then went for a walk along the lake. An altogether lovely afternoon in centro Lugano.

Santa Barbara Day 4: Pics and more pics

Coffee on the patio of our Airbnb (our studio is the door on the right)

After morning coffee on the patio and a delicious Mexican lunch, we headed downtown and I indulged my tourist tendencies!

I was a little surprised at how much there was to see and how intriguing I found it all.

I particularly loved the City Hall. In fact, I think the dramatic setting would make handling bureaucracy that much easier.

What we see when we exit our Airbnb
