A beautiful Seva tribute

This beautiful tribute was created by our friend, Thulasi, from Chennai, India.

It’s so sweet and heartfelt that I felt to share it in my blog.

Just click on the photo and the YouTube video will play.

The well is dry

This was a week that took a lot out of me. And it’s not over yet.

We have a half day retreat tomorrow, followed by a rehearsal in the evening.

Then there’s singing for Sunday service, followed by recording a video in the afternoon.

So, I’m feeling momentarily out of juice and quite ready for an early night.

My favorite Seva memory

I finally have the bandwidth to share my favorite memory of Seva.

I had only moved to the Ananda Palo Alto community in 1999, so when I relocated to Assisi in 2002 to be part of a singing group touring Italy, I was still quite new to the path.

In January of 2004, Assisi was raided by the Guardia di Finanza, and nine of our key leaders were put in prison in March. Although it took something like seven years, the charges were eventually completely repudiated, but while it was happening it was a very intense situation.

Jyotish and Devi were visiting Ananda Assisi for a Kriyaban retreat followed by a big public event in celebration of Yogananda’s Mahasamadhi. They and many others stepped right in to cover for the leaders and teachers who were in prison so the event went off as planned.

Our choir director was among those arrested, so I was called upon to direct the choir, including for a large concert we had planned to do in Perugia later in the week.

And this is where Seva came into the picture.

You see, there was a large group of American devotees coming to Assisi on pilgrimage. Imagine their surprise when they arrived to the news of all that was going on!

To me, they were like the cavalry; a group of solid, seasoned devotees who came in and helped prop us up when we had been broadsided by circumstances. And Seva stood out for me, even in the midst of this amazing group of souls.

So, I asked her to sing the woman’s solo at the beginning of “Lift Your Hearts.” I remember her looking a little surprised, but she said yes. Later I discovered (I don’t recall exactly how) that Seva was not normally a soloist! I guess I had put her on the spot, but she didn’t hesitate. She simply did it.

And that is now a memory I cherish.

Here’s a recording of the song from that concert. Seva’s is the second solo voice you hear at the beginning.

Feeling a little burnt out

I’m not so accustomed any more to having both early morning commitments (in town, no less!) and evening events on the same day (while working intensely in the office in between).

But this week that’s happening multiple days in a row!

So, yeah, I’m feeling a little burnt out, but it’s not nearly as bad as the days when I used to stay up until the wee hours — then, I often was burning the candle at both ends.

Now it’s making me that much more determined to get to bed on time!

A marathon day

This was one of those days that never end. I started early and just kept going.

Why? Because there was something I had put off and put off, but it had to be completely finished today.

Of course, it was bigger and more involved than I remembered. But at least now it’s done.

Balancing the intensity

Stunningly beautiful leaves at Rajarsi Park

Today was an intense day.

Interestingly, during my morning walk I was drawn to one of the big cedar trees on the ridge, stopping to rest hands and forehead against the trunk for a while.

And all day long I found myself marveling at the continuing beauty of the autumn leaves.

I think my soul was nudging me towards subtle acts of self-care, and I’m grateful.

Risen in freedom

A great soul and dear friend just made her transition this evening.

Go with all our love, dear Seva.

I see your soul soaring in light, and Master and Swamiji welcoming you with great love and joy.

But we will miss you.

Choir returns to the Temple of Light

I managed to take a few pics of choir the other night.

On the one hand it felt quite low key and normal, but on the other hand it was our first time in the Temple as a choir in almost two years!

Definitely a moment worth capturing.

Rocking the BP!

Today I had a follow-up doctor’s appointment to review my labs and MRI. There are a few things that need further investigation, but blood pressure was NOT one of them.

Even after going off the meds in September and my recent month-long “eating rebellion” and some weeks of inconsistent walking, my reading this afternoon was 102/64!

Yeah, I think it’s pretty clear that high blood pressure is no longer my issue.

YES!

“Anticipation, anticipation…”

In just over an hour from now choir at Ananda Village will meet for the first time in twenty months! Twenty months — can you believe it?!?

Talk about anticipation….! Which got me thinking about the Carly Simon song. Do you remember it?

Anticipation, anticipation
Is makin’ me late
Is keepin’ me waitin’

The chorus is all I really recalled, and I realize now that I only ever knew the first two words even of the chorus! 😂
