More about the concert

There were many, many wonderful things about Wednesday night’s concert.

First and foremost, for me personally, is that it was the first time since last December that we could actually sing in the Temple of Light! Che gioia!

Another thing that made it special was collaborating with a team of young people from our Expanding Light Ashram. We worked together on planning the program, plus they wrapped their auras around many of the technical and promotional aspects. Yay, team!

Every program we’ve put on since the beginning of the pandemic has been a “first,” as each event had to be adjusted for ever-changing circumstances. On this concert for the first time we combined live performers in the Temple of Light, live performers in other locations around the world, and pre-recorded videos. It definitely kept our sound and video team on their toes!

Finally, I want to highlight a couple of special moments during the evening. Throughout this program I was much more aware of challenging global realities; much more so than during previous “worldwide” concerts that we’ve produced.

I was especially moved when our dear friend in Tel Aviv sang:
Lightly I fly when I live in laughter,
Lightly I fly when my heart sings.
Fling to the ground every heavy burden.
Now I can soar up above the clouds!

It was even more touching when her close spiritual friends in California joined her via the magic of video!

Then there were our friends in Mumbai. They were dealing with the double challenges of COVID and a cyclone, but that didn’t stop them from joining us live (at 8:30 in the morning their time!) to celebrate Swamiji.

As an appreciative friend/audience member put it: “I love our international concerts… Swamiji wanted us to join together around the world, and you have all made it so.”

And now…the birthday concert!

I have so much I’d like to share about last night’s concert, but the first order of business was thanking the many, many people who made it possible and now I’m out of gas.

Yesterday really was a full day; I’m ready to go home and spend a relaxing evening with my hubby. 🤗

Celebrating Swamiji

Today we celebrated Swami Kriyananda with an online group meditation; a vows ceremony for devotees deepening their commitment to Ananda as their spiritual path; the launch of the Ananda Music Oral History Videos; and — finally — an amazing worldwide concert!

The above video starts off the series, with photos of Yogananda and Kriyananda together with a number of quotes explaining the importance of music at Ananda — and on the spiritual path in general.

A video of the concert will be available for me to share tomorrow. So all I’ll say for now is that it was beyond amazing. More tomorrow…

Time for a change?

Hard to believe, but tomorrow will mark the 2-year anniversary of this blog!

I’m feeling like it’s time to change things up a little. We’ll see what inspiration comes…

Mom’s favorite flower

My mother, Louise, loved all kinds of flowers — roses, gladiolus, bottlebrush, morning glories, cyclamen — but I believe rhododendrons were her absolute favorites.

I see them all around the Village at this time of year and they always make me think of her. 💗

Say it with photos

Today was the first time since December that we had live music for Sunday service! And — boy oh boy — did it feel GOOD!

I think you can tell from these photos just how happy we were to be singing again! There was such overwhelming joy at one point during our warm-up rehearsal that I couldn’t hold back the tears. I’ve so missed being a channel for this music.

It was this verse from “Well Done, Lord!” that really got me:
Well done, Lord! Oh, very well done!
At last I’ve discovered the mystic key:
The world’s joy, O Secretive One!
Replies to Your sweetness in me.
For here in my heart lies the answer:
Your love, shedding light like the sun!
All life seems to leap like a dancer
When, gazing, I see only Thee!

I feel the joy, the sweetness, the love and the light so strongly through our music. And I’m so grateful.

Written but not shared

No need to get into the boring details, but suffice it to say that the entire time we were on vacation, my Facebook settings were switched so that no one could see my posts!

Considering that my commitment is to write something every single day, I feel compelled to make up for the “Lost Posts” by listing them below.

Home again, home again (May 13)

Whew! I feel so much better now. 😂

Home again, home again

I love where we live and am grateful to have such serene beauty to come home to.

On the other hand, it came as a bit of a shock to be in such warm weather after four days of cool, misty fog!

And it was a little jarring to be fully immersed in work and meetings and plans after four days of complete relaxation.

Ah well, duality strikes again!

Ingredients for a successful vacation

Ramesha and I are agreed that this was one of our best vacations ever. So, it seems wise to make note of what worked, in order to remember it for next time.

Being near the main drag of Carmel allowed us to park at the hotel and then not touch the car again until the morning we left. We walked to restaurants; we walked to pick up groceries; we walked to parks; and we walked to the beach. I had slacked off on walking during my last challenge, but these three days more than made up for it!

On our first full day we arrived back at our room pooped out from lots of walking and ready for a nap…only to realize that some new hotel guests had arrived in the room directly above us and they were really noisy! Heavy footsteps, loud laughter, banging doors type noisy.

It was bad enough in the afternoon but our intuition told us they were there to party and we weren’t eager to be woken up in the wee hours of the morning. So, we asked to move to a different room! It was a little annoying having to pack everything up and then unpack it again, but we were soooo glad we did! And we realized that in future we should always ask for an upstairs room.

We loved having very little on our agenda. We did virtually no sightseeing and oriented our “schedule” around eating delicious meals whenever we were good and ready.

We got plenty of rest, getting to bed early and not being in a rush to get up and go.

Adding to all that was the natural charm and beauty of Carmel — uniquely quaint buildings; flowers blooming everywhere; stunning artwork in every other shop; the beautiful white sand beach; and some of the nicest, most genuinely friendly restaurant people we’ve ever encountered.

All in all, it was a perfect vacation!
